Over the two days this latest event in the 'plotting a new course' series saw over 150 participants both hear about how new developments in the UK will impact on alcohol, drugs and tobacco policies and future practice, and have the opportunity to consider the immediate practical implications.

Against the backdrop of the ‘integration agenda’ – evident in the various strategies and structures across the UK – the programme was designed to examine how we address ‘substance use’ in the wider public health context, embracing a more holistic approach, in terms of policy legislation and practice, and involving policy reformers, consumers, commissioners, service providers, patients/service users and welfare recipients.

Both days combined presentations by leading figures and facilitated discussions, to examine current policy issues with respect to drugs, alcohol and tobacco, the nature and extent of problems, the state of the evidence and the new public health policy drivers.

The aim of the conference was to enable participants to have an understanding of the impact of imminent changes in policy and structures on their work, including the relationships between national policy developments, local policy and implementation.
